and Prevention Month Act, 2019
LİNK : https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-42/session-1/bill-94
97 sayılı yasa tasarısı: Bill 97, Genocide
Awareness, Commemoration, Prevention and Education Month Act, 2019
Milletvekili Aris Babikian, Ontario Yasama Meclisi’nde 9 Mayıs tarihinde
yapılan ikinci okumada, Yunan, GKRY ve Pontus dernekleri, Keldani Kilisesi,
Alpha Education Group, Süryani Dernekleri, Rus Dernekleri, Ermeni Dernekleri,
Tamil, Sri Lanka ve Ruanda derneklerini saymış, bunların meclise mektuplar
gönderdiklerini söylemiş. Tasarıya destek vermek üzere PC’den milletvekilleri
Vincent Ke (Nanjing soykırımı iddiaları açısından), Logan Kanapathi (Tamil
soykırımı iddiaları açısından), Sheref Sabawy, Yeni Demokratik Parti’den (NDP)
milletvekilleri Jill Andrew (Holokost açısından), Sol Mamakva ( Yerel
Oturumun
sonunda yasa tasarısı Adalet Komitesi’ne havale edilmiştir.
Ekteki Canadian Hellenic Congress’in konuyla ilgili duyurusu, yasa tasarısının
bizler açısından ciddiyetini ortaya koyuyor.
Babikian’ın Türk toplumuna karşı “hate speech” ve “discrimination” teşkil eden
bu yasa tekliflerine toplumumuzun tepki vermesi önem taşıyor.

GÖNDERİLEBİLECEK ÖRNEK İNGİLİZCE METİN
I would like
to reach out to you urgently to share my great disappointment about an issue
that has come to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario by a member of Ontario PC
Caucus.
Two Private Member Bills introduced by MPP Mr. Aris Babikian, namely “Bill
94/2019, titled An Act to proclaim the month of April as Genocide Awareness,
Education, Condemnation and Prevention Month” and “Bill 97/2019, titled
An Act to proclaim Genocide Awareness, Commemoration, Prevention and Education
Month” are nothing but carrying his narrow community agenda to Ontario
Legislative Assembly. This is a selfish, selective way of presenting the issue.
He only mentions issues that reflect his own community. Hiding behind an
important issue such as genocide tries to paint other communities, including
mine, in an unacceptable way. We do not see these as genocide. The historic
facts point otherwise.
For example the British Parliament does NOT recognize the Armenian issue as
genocide. The British are the ones who would know, because they were the
occupying power and had access to all Ottoman archives at the time. In fact,
they did open a court case in Malta after World War I, but all Ottoman
officials were acquitted from any crime against humanity. While this is the case,
who is Mr. Babikian to claim that Turks have committed genocide against the
Armenians? We see this as discrimination against our community. The thing to do
should be to try and look forward and make balanced academic research, not try
to impose his own selfish and narrow agenda upon Canada and Ontario. I do not
want my children to be tainted as “genocide perpetrators” and discriminated
against at school.
The same thing goes for the so-called Pontic claims. The reason there are no
Pontic people in the Black Sea region of Turkey today is because a population
exchange took place in the 1920’s, not because there was a massacre. And, guess
who proposed a population exchange during the Lausanne Conference? The Greek
Prime Minister Venizelos (This is in the Lausanne Conference minutes). Would PM
Venizelos have shown Turkish leader Atatürk as a candidate for the Nobel Peace
Prize if he believed that he had committed genocide against a Greek Christian
minority? Even this is enough to show that Mr. Babikian and others’ similar
claims are not true. It is exactly for this reason that the so-called Pontic
genocide claims were defeated in the Canadian Senate a few months ago. And
about the Assyrian-Chaldean-Syriac genocide claims from 1914-1922, what kind of
information are these claims based on? Mr. Babikian is trying his luck in
Ontario. He trusts that the good people and the good MPP’s of Ontario would not
know better and would allow him to push these distorted claims through
Parliament. I am sure you will not allow him to do that.
If he is allowed, this will cast a long shadow on Turkish-Canadian relations.
It will discriminate against my Turkish-Canadian community. We are good
Canadians and tax payers. We expect you to prevent this.
As the citizens of Ontario, we would like to built our common future on truth,
embracing every citizen living in this beautiful province and reconciliation,
rather than casting one’s ill intended, narrow interest claims.
We, therefore kindly request you to take action against Private Member Bills
“94 and 97” and prevent MPP Babikian from hijacking and poisoning the
culturally embracing and business friendly atmosphere here in beautiful
Ontario.
Kind regards,
